Welcome to beautiful Altadena, a place that Spanish Sailors once called sabanilla de oro, or “altar of gold,” due to the rolling expanses of California golden poppies dotting the landscape.
Getting its name from neighboring Pasadena, Altadena literally means “Upper Dena” as a reference to its larger neighborhood to the south. Altadena’s history can mostly be traced to Captain John Woodbury, who developed a subdivision and nurtury on the land in the 1880s. Captain Woodbury’s house is still standing in Altadena, and is even currently occupied!
Not long after Altadena began development, it began attracting wealthy residents from back East. In fact, the area became so attractive to the upper classes that a community soon developed on Mariposa Street known as “Millionaire’s Row.”
One of Altadena’s most notable attractions is its annual event known as “Christmas Tree Lane,” the oldest large-scale tree lighting ceremony of its kind in the country. Each year, residents adorn the massive cedar trees lining the streets with a string of festive lights, drawing onlookers from miles away.
Whether you’re visiting Altadena for its gorgeous scenery, or if you need to get around town as a resident or worker, LA City Cab will gladly be your ride.
