In 1841, a high-ranking Mexican military official was granted nearly 7,000 acres of land in the San Gabriel Valley. The area was pristine, and of top quality for ranching and farming purposes. The name of that Mexican corporal? Andres Duarte, who named his new plot of land “Rancho Azusa de Duarte.”
Since then, Duarte has staked its claim as one of the San Gabriel Valley’s more sought-after bedroom community neighborhoods. Notably, the historic Route 66 passes through Duarte, right down Huntington Drive in the middle of town.
As far back as the mid 19th century, Duarte has been popular with those looking to live a quieter lifestyle, especially with an agricultural flavor. The Duarte soil and climate makes it particularly well-suited for growing citrus fruits, of which many trees still dot the landscape today!
