The Great Partition of 1871 was a massive lawsuit over land rights that resulted in Andrew Glassell being granted a portion of the property now known — appropriately — as Glassell Park.
Subdivisions began to crop up in the early 1900s, and Glassell Park grew substantially as a viable neighborhood adjacent to the sprawl of Los Angeles proper. The burgeoning city boasted railway service connecting it to Eagle Rock, and families began putting down roots in Glassell Park in earnest.
This community has a musical note worth mentioning, as well: John Cage, one of the most important 20th century composers known for his avant-garde work, made Glassell Park his home in the 1920s and 1930s.
